When you add a new student in the system or when a parent adds a new student, the system automatically marks them as participating in the recital.
You are able to change this option by going to Magic > Online Registration > Settings tab and checking this box:
With 'New Account Recital Setting Off' checked, any new student created by you or created by a parent will automatically get this box unchecked on their student profile:
